In a dedicated effort to improve health, hygiene, and living standards within basic schools, Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, Member of Parliament for Akatsi North, co-led a sod-cutting ceremony at Kpohe Basic School alongside DCE Hon. Bless Kodjo Katamani. The event served as a critical step forward in addressing non-academic barriers to effective learning, drawing a wide cross-section of community members, traditional authorities, and educational representatives who lauded the joint leadership of the MP and the District Assembly.
The planned interventions at Kpohe Basic School focus heavily on staff welfare and environmental health. The construction package includes a six-unit teachers’ residence equipped with ancillary facilities, a 12-unit toilet facility, and a mechanized borehole system. The installation of the mechanized borehole is particularly critical, as it will guarantee a reliable, permanent source of potable water for both students and teaching staff, drastically improving daily hygiene practices and reducing waterborne health risks.
Speaking during the ceremony, Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe highlighted that quality education cannot be achieved in isolation from essential support services such as clean water and adequate housing. He noted that rural teachers often face severe accommodation challenges, which adversely impacts lesson delivery and staff morale. By delivering standard staff housing and clean water access, the MP reaffirmed his intent to make rural postings far more attractive and sustainable for educators in the district.
The chiefs, elders, and community members of Kpohe welcomed the initiative with high enthusiasm, commending Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe for his continuous engagement and responsiveness to local priorities. Assembly members and youth leaders assured the delegation that the community would provide a safe and cooperative environment for the construction teams, ensuring that the facilities are completed strictly on schedule to serve the immediate needs of the school.
