Agotime-Ziope MP Backs Call to Recognize Ecocide as Fifth International Crime

​The Member of Parliament for Agotime-Ziope, Hon. Charles Agbeve, has thrown his strong support behind a landmark proposal to recognize ecocide as the fifth international crime. Speaking in Parliament, the lawmaker emphasized the urgent need to hold individuals and corporations accountable for severe, widespread, or long-term destruction of the natural environment. His endorsement aligns Ghana with a growing global movement advocating for legal mechanisms to curb severe environmental degradation, such as illegal mining (galamsey) and habitat destruction, which continue to threaten local communities and natural resources. 

​Ecocide, defined as the mass damage or destruction of ecosystems, is being championed internationally to stand alongside genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Hon. Agbeve highlighted that environmental crimes carry profound socio-economic consequences, often destabilizing livelihoods, polluting vital water bodies, and endangering future generations. He called for proactive legislative action both domestically and internationally to ensure that environmental protection is backed by enforceable legal sanctions. 

​In his address, the Agotime-Ziope MP urged his parliamentary colleagues and stakeholders across the country to lead by example in championing sustainable environmental governance. He noted that safeguarding nature is a collective responsibility that requires unwavering political commitment, strong judicial framework, and active community participation. By backing the recognition of ecocide as an international crime, the lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to climate justice, environmental stewardship, and protecting ecosystems for posterity.
