RIP: Former Black Stars Defender George Blay Laid to Rest

Former Ghana international defender George Blay has been laid to rest in a private ceremony attended by family and close loved ones in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Born on 7 August 1980, Blay was a talented and versatile full-back who represented Ghana with distinction at both youth and senior levels. He played a pivotal role in the Black Satellites team that advanced to the quarter-finals of the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship in Nigeria. He went on to earn seven caps for the senior Black Stars between 2000 and 2002, scoring one goal, and was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations in Mali. He also featured prominently during the team’s 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Known for his blistering pace, disciplined defending, and surging runs from the back, Blay earned widespread respect from teammates, coaches, and fans alike during his time with the national team.

At club level, Blay enjoyed a solid professional career across Europe. He featured for several Belgian sides, including Standard Liège, K.V. Mechelen, R.A.A. Louviéroise, and Royal Antwerp, before moving to Romania, where he helped Dinamo București clinch the Romanian Liga I title in the 2006–07 season.

Though his senior international career was relatively brief, George Blay’s dedication, professionalism, and contributions left a lasting mark on Ghanaian football. He will be remembered as one of the committed defenders who helped shape the Black Stars’ early 2000s era.
