GFA Promises New Black Stars Coach Ahead of AFCON Qualifiers

1 min read

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has reassured football fans that a new head coach will be appointed for the Black Stars prior to the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

The managerial post became open after Portuguese trainer Carlos Queiroz saw his contract lapse following Ghana's Round of 32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Both parties failed to reach terms on a contract extension, leading to a mutual parting of ways.

With the Black Stars scheduled to regroup in September to kick off their 2027 AFCON qualification series, the football governing body is rushing to finalize the appointment.

"Ghana will have a coach before we regroup," Okraku stated in an interview with 3Sports. "The coach who will lead the Black Stars is 99% in place. The coach who will lead the Black Stars is already working."

"We are just at that last line where we have to sign papers and formalize the relationship. We have a machinery in place; we are working," he added.
