A Ghanaian national evacuated from South Africa has passed away shortly after arriving at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. The individual was part of a government-led evacuation effort aimed at bringing home citizens affected by the recent wave of xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
The deceased was among a group of 50 Ghanaian returnees who arrived in the country at 5:50 p.m. aboard an Air Tanzania flight.
According to official statements from the Ministry, fellow passengers noticed the individual's health worsening approximately 30 minutes before the aircraft landed in Accra.
A standby medical emergency team immediately received the passenger upon landing and carried out life-saving protocols. Despite their efforts, doctors officially declared the passenger dead at 6:55 p.m.
The Ministry expressed its deepest condolences and confirmed that steps are being taken to notify the deceased's family. The body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
