On Saturday, August 8, 2026, the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, attended the Grand Durbar of the 70th Afenorto Festival in Mepe as the Special Guest of Honour. Celebrated annually by the people of Mepe, the Afenorto Festival serves as a vibrant display of the community’s deep cultural heritage, customs, and rich traditions.

Hon. James Gunu was joined by several key dignitaries, including the Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as well as the District Chief Executive for North Tongu, Hon. Victoria Amefadzie Yawa Doe. The event opened with an impressive procession of traditional chiefs arriving at the durbar grounds, establishing a solemn and memorable tone for the day's cultural showcase.

Cultural celebrations like Afenorto play a critical role in reconnecting the youth with their roots, offering them insight into their ancestral journey and core community values. Grasping this shared history provides the younger generation with a strong foundation to guide their future endeavors.

During the event, political leaders presented a status report on completed government projects in the North Tongu District, while also outlining upcoming initiatives and broader development goals. A primary focus was the Volta Economic Corridor—a strategic program designed to harness the economic potential of the Volta Lake.

Ultimately, the Afenorto Festival remains a vital pillar for reinforcing unity and preserving the cultural legacy of Mepe.
