President Mahama to Undertake Historic Official Visit to Jamaica to Strengthen Ghana-Caribbean Ties and Advance the Global Reparations Agenda

President John Dramani Mahama will travel to Kingston, Jamaica, for a four-day official visit from Sunday, 2 August to Wednesday, 5 August 2026. The trip aims to strengthen the long historical and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Jamaica. It also seeks to boost cooperation with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The visit follows Ghana’s recent support and relief to Jamaica after a major natural disaster. President Mahama’s presence will show Ghana’s continued solidarity with its Caribbean partners. It will also highlight the strong links between Africa and its Diaspora in times of hardship and recovery.

A main goal of the visit is to advance the call for reparations for the transatlantic slave trade and its lasting effects. President Mahama will take part in a high-level Reparations Dialogue at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, with Sir Hilary Beckles. He will also lay a wreath at the shrine of National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey and visit Seville Heritage Park to see the preserved Ghanaian Village Houses.

Other key activities include bilateral talks at the Office of the Prime Minister, an address to a joint session of Parliament, a Trade and Investment Dialogue, a tour of Kingston Freeport, a courtesy call from Opposition Leader Mark Golding, attendance at the “Mello-Go-Roun” cultural event, and a State Dinner hosted by Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen and Lady Allen.
