Healthcare for mothers and children in the North Tongu District has received a significant boost following the opening of two modern 15-bed Mother and Child Health Units at the Volo and Fodzoku Health Centres on August 28 and 29, 2026.
The new facilities were fully funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and delivered in partnership with Engage Now Africa. Designed to serve more than 19,000 residents across the Volo and Fodzoku areas, the units offer comprehensive antenatal, delivery, postnatal, and referral care to communities that have previously faced inadequate medical infrastructure and difficult access.
During the opening events, Ms. Cecilia Amankwah, Country Director for Engage Now Africa, highlighted that safe delivery environments are essential for providing dignified maternal healthcare. Mrs. Marian Esiape, representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, emphasized how strong partnerships can create lasting change in underserved areas.
The District Director of Health Services, Mr. Michael S.K. Zigah, together with Volta Regional Health Director, Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dodor, commended the initiative. They noted that the updated facilities will enhance patient care while providing a far better working environment for medical personnel.
This initiative represents the third healthcare project completed in North Tongu over the past year through this joint partnership. The District Health Directorate extended sincere thanks to Engage Now Africa, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Member of Parliament Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, local traditional leaders, and healthcare workers for their continuous dedication to the region.
