Aflao Youth Spearhead Sanitation Drive Through Volunteer Cleanup Campaigns

In a commendable display of community initiative, the youth group known as Green Street is championing improved sanitation across Aflao through regular volunteer cleanup exercises.

The group, made up of students, artisans, business owners, journalists, and dedicated community volunteers, has been targeting key public areas including streets, gutters, lorry parks, and other spaces plagued by poor waste management. Participants carry out weekly cleanups while actively educating residents on proper waste disposal practices.

Organizers aim to foster a lasting culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility within the municipality.

Speaking during a cleanup exercise at the Aflao-Kumasi Lorry Station near the border, group spokesperson Abigail Abotsi, a journalist, emphasized: “We cannot rely solely on government intervention. A clean environment reduces disease, improves public health, and enhances the image of our community.”

The initiative has earned strong support from traditional authorities, assembly members, and residents alike. Several traders have begun providing waste bins at their stalls, while others have actively joined the cleanup efforts.

The Ketu South Municipal Assembly has pledged logistical support and more consistent refuse collection. Plans are also underway to formally register the group as “Aflao Youth for Cleanliness” to better coordinate activities and strengthen partnerships with Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

This grassroots effort highlights the powerful role of youth volunteerism in driving sustainable community development from the ground up.
