Residents of Akatsi Monome-Drakate Demand Legal Removal of Fulani Herdsmen

2 min read

In a powerful display of community resolve, residents of Akatsi Monome-Drakate staged a peaceful demonstration and presented a formal petition to the Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Daniel Dagba, calling for the immediate and lawful eviction of Fulani herdsmen from their communities.

Led by Hon. Neyram Satsi, the Assemblyman for the Monome-Drakate Electoral Area, the demonstrators marched through key areas of the community before converging at the Municipal Assembly offices. Participants carried placards with messages emphasizing the protection of farmlands, livestock, and personal safety. The protest remained orderly, reflecting the community’s commitment to legal and peaceful channels in addressing long-standing grievances.

The petition highlights several pressing concerns, including alleged destruction of crops by roaming cattle, threats to local farmers’ livelihoods, and recurring security incidents attributed to the presence of the herdsmen. Residents argue that despite previous appeals, the situation continues to escalate, prompting them to seek decisive intervention from municipal authorities to enforce existing laws on land use and nomadic herding.

Hon. Neyram Satsi, who spearheaded the initiative, addressed the gathering and the MCE directly, stressing that the demand is not rooted in ethnic bias but in the necessity to safeguard the community’s agricultural heritage and ensure peaceful coexistence. He urged Hon. Daniel Dagba to expedite processes that would lead to the legal relocation or regulation of the herdsmen’s activities within the municipality.

Local authorities have acknowledged receipt of the petition, with Hon. Daniel Dagba assuring residents that the matter will be thoroughly reviewed in consultation with relevant stakeholders, including security agencies and traditional leaders. The demonstration has sparked broader conversations about sustainable solutions to farmer-herder conflicts across the Volta Region, as communities seek lasting harmony between agricultural interests and pastoral practices.
