The Member of Parliament for Afadzato South, Hon. Frank Afriyie, has called on residents and traditional leaders across the Volta Region to remain vigilant and steadfast in preserving the area’s pristine environment against the menace of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey. Speaking from the podium at Have EP Church harvest celebrations, the lawmaker emphasized that unlike several other regions in the country currently grappling with severe water pollution and deforestation, the Volta Region remains largely free from illegal mining activities.
Hon. Afriyie highlighted that the region’s lush forests, fertile agricultural lands, and clean water bodies are vital assets that sustain local livelihoods and boost eco-tourism. He warned against complacency, noting that the threat of galamsey encroaching into peaceful communities is always present if local stakeholders relax their guard. He urged church congregations, traditional authorities, and community members to act as active stewards of the land, reporting any suspicious activities that could jeopardize the environment.
Reaffirming his commitment to sustainable development, the MP assured constituents that local authorities and security agencies will continue to enforce measures that safeguard natural resources. He concluded by calling for unified community action, stressing that protecting the environment today is a sacred duty to ensure a healthy, safe, and prosperous future for generations to come.
