The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has issued a notice of intent to embark on an industrial action starting Monday, October 19, 2026. The lecturers are threatening to withdraw all teaching and related academic services if the government fails to pay their 2026 Book and Research Allowance by Friday, October 16.
In an official notice dated October 9, 2026, addressed to the National Labour Commission (NLC), UTAG-UG expressed strong dissatisfaction over the persistent delays in disbursing the allowance. The association highlighted that the government's inaction directly breaches a 2020 Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between both parties, which explicitly mandates that the annual allowance be fully disbursed by the end of August each year.
The warning notice, signed by UTAG-UG President Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison, has been served to key state agencies and ministries, including the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission. Copies were also submitted to the national executive leadership of UTAG to align strategies ahead of the prospective strike.
If the October 16 deadline lapses without resolution, the impending industrial action is set to disrupt teaching, research supervision, and general academic activities across the University of Ghana campus. Students and stakeholders now await an urgent response from the relevant government bodies to avert a potential breakdown in academic operations.
