2 min read

The 93rd Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT 93) serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) organized a breast cancer awareness drive at its Headquarters in Al Qawzah, Lebanon, on Friday, October 9, 2026.

Organized as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the initiative aimed to educate military and civilian personnel on early warning signs, self-examination routines, and the critical role of timely medical intervention.

In his keynote address, the Commanding Officer of GHANBATT 93, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Bortey Newson, highlighted troop wellness as a vital foundation for operational readiness and successful mission execution. He reminded personnel that breast cancer impacts both men and women, urging everyone to take proactive responsibility for their health.

Lieutenant Colonel Newson underscored the need for routine screenings and preventive care, reassuring troops that seeking medical guidance is a sign of health awareness, not something to be stigmatized. He encouraged female officers and soldiers to undergo regular examinations while advising male personnel to remain equally attentive to their physical well-being.

Providing technical guidance, Senior Medical Officer Captain Maltiti Mohammed gave a presentation detailing potential causes, risk factors, and common indicators of the disease. She also demonstrated step-by-step techniques for self-examination, stressed the value of professional clinical screenings, and explained how early detection significantly increases treatment success rates.

The health campaign is part of GHANBATT 93’s ongoing efforts to safeguard personnel well-being and maintain high mission readiness in the operational theater.
