Torrential Rains Trigger Deadly Flooding Across Ghana

1 min read

Heavy downpours have caused widespread flooding, submerging homes, disrupting transport, and claiming lives in areas like Samreboi. At least two deaths were reported as floodwaters ravaged communities, with the Ghana Meteorological Agency issuing thunderstorm warnings for coastal and northern regions.

In Accra and other urban centers, roads turned into rivers, stranding commuters and damaging infrastructure. Parts of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Madina-Adenta stretch were severely affected, exacerbating transport chaos.

Residents and officials blame poor drainage, choked gutters, and illegal mining (galamsey) for worsening the impacts. Over 180 homes were submerged in some districts, prompting emergency responses and calls for long-term prevention measures.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency continues to monitor conditions, advising precautionary actions. This recurring crisis during the rainy season underscores the urgent need for better urban planning and climate resilience strategies nationwide.
