The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has delivered a scathing indictment of corruption, calling it a major stumbling block to Ghana's national development. Speaking on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Asogli Te Za celebration which also marked his 23rd anniversary on the throne the traditional ruler highlighted the severe economic hardship endured by citizens between 2022 and 2024. He noted that pervasive corruption drove many Ghanaians to seek refuge abroad, preferring the harsh realities of xenophobic isolation in places like South Africa over the stifling economic conditions at home.
Highlighting the human toll of the crisis, Togbe Afede revealed alarming statistics on mental health and loss of life caused by extreme desperation. He noted that Ghana recorded about 134 suicides in 2024 alone, with the situation worsening in the first half of 2025 as cases surged to 175. The monarch linked much of this devastation to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which wiped out the life savings of countless citizens after excessive borrowing by the previous administration severely destabilized the economy.
Among the most egregious examples of corruption, Togbe Afede singled out the shameless exploitation of the state scholarship scheme. He condemned former top government officials for claiming funds explicitly reserved for needy students to finance their own studies abroad. Exposing the depth of the abuse, he revealed that some high-ranking figures went as far as extending these state-funded scholarships to cover their spouses and children, redirecting vital resources away from underprivileged youth who needed them most.
The traditional leader expressed deep concern over the moral decay that allowed such actions to be justified publicly. He criticized those who actively defended these acts, describing them as "ugly and naked acts of corruption" that undermine public trust and social equity. Togbe Afede emphasized that the fight against corruption cannot succeed without a collective return to honesty, accountability, and respect for the truth across all levels of leadership.
Concluding his address, the Agbogbomefia urged leaders and citizens alike to prioritize integrity to restore hope and rebuild the nation's economic stability. As Ghana reflects on the lingering impacts of past financial mismanagements, Togbe Afede’s powerful call to action serves as a crucial reminder that eradicating corruption is essential to preventing future economic collapse and protecting the vulnerable.
