The Swiss Embassy in Accra has officially announced the appointment of Dr. Thomas Oertle as Switzerland’s new Ambassador-designate to Ghana, Benin, and Togo.

Dr. Oertle brings a wealth of international experience to his new role. Prior to his arrival in Accra, he served as Switzerland’s Head of Mission in Muscat, overseeing diplomatic relations with both the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Yemen.

His extensive career in Africa also includes serving as the Regional Head for Swiss International Cooperation in the Horn of Africa. Based in Nairobi, he directed Swiss development and diplomatic initiatives across Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.

Before entering the diplomatic service, Dr. Oertle pursued an impressive academic path in the natural sciences. He studied molecular biology and neuroscience at ETH Zurich and the Neuroscience Center Zurich, where he earned his doctorate.

Expressing optimism about his new assignment, Ambassador Oertle emphasized his commitment to deepening Switzerland’s enduring relationships with Ghana, Benin, and Togo.

He aims to expand collaboration across key sectors, including government, business, academia, civil society, and the arts."Diplomacy is ultimately about people," Ambassador Oertle noted. "I want to listen to different perspectives, bring people and ideas together, and identify areas where Switzerland and its partners can pursue common interests."

With a focus on mutual growth, investment opportunities, and economic cooperation, Dr. Oertle's tenure marks an exciting new chapter for Swiss diplomacy in West Africa.
