A total of 164 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the South Tongu District have received financial support ranging from GH¢1,000 to GH¢4,500 under the District Assembly’s Disability Fund for the third and fourth quarters of the 2025 financial year. The beneficiaries were selected through a transparent screening process that involved Assembly Members from all 40 electoral areas in the district.
Among the recipients is 14-year-old Makafui Ahovi, a Junior High School One pupil of Bekpo Sonukpo Basic School. He was identified by District Chief Executive Hon. Victoria Dzeklo during recent torrential flood response efforts in the area.
Speaking at the disbursement ceremony, Hon. Victoria Dzeklo commended the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, led by Mr. Joel Quarcoo, and Social Services Sub-Committee Chairman Hon. Benjamin Amekudzi for ensuring equitable distribution of the funds. She also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his continued commitment to the welfare of PWDs nationwide. “This fund is meant to transform your lives and expand your businesses. It is not meant for partying or spending on funeral clothes and other material things,” the DCE stated.
Hon. Dzeklo further disclosed that plans are far advanced to supply beneficiaries with equipment and tools for kente weaving, soap making, and other vocational trades. Member of Parliament for South Tongu and member of Parliament’s Disability Caucus, Hon. Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, encouraged the beneficiaries to remain confident and focused on their abilities, declaring that “disability is not inability.”
The event was chaired by Mr. Edem Tornyigah, Chairman of the South Tongu District Association of PWDs, who expressed gratitude to the Assembly on behalf of all the recipients.
