Residents of Sokpoe in the South Tongu District are appealing to local authorities for the immediate dredging and desilting of a massive swamp located directly in front of the Sokpoe Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) Primary School. Community members report that even minor rainfall causes the low-lying wetland to overflow rapidly, turning the surrounding pathway into a muddy, waterlogged obstacle course. The persistent flooding severely limits access to the school campus and creates daily disruption for both students and residents living nearby.
The worsening conditions during heavy downpours have sparked deep concern among parents and guardians who worry about the safety of children navigating the submerged grounds. Pupils attempting to reach their classrooms are often forced to wade through deep, stagnant water, damaging their footwear and uniforms while putting themselves at unnecessary risk. Community leaders note that the problem intensifies significantly during peak rainy seasons, making attendance a continuous struggle for many young learners.
Beyond the logistical challenges, the stagnant water poses a major public health threat to the surrounding neighborhood. Residents fear the neglected swamp is serving as a primary breeding ground for mosquitoes, heightened by growing concerns over rising malaria transmission among schoolchildren and nearby households. The persistent moisture and trapped runoff have also created unsanitary conditions that deteriorate with every rainfall event.
Calling for swift intervention, the Sokpoe community is urging the South Tongu District Assembly, the Ministry of Sanitation, and relevant government agencies to inspect the site and construct a proper drainage system. Residents emphasize that proactive dredging before the onset of heavier downpours is critical to safeguarding public health, restoring safe access to the PCG Primary School, and providing a lasting solution for the entire neighborhood.
