President John Dramani Mahama has advocated for a deeper partnership between the government and traditional leaders to enhance local governance and accelerate development across Ghana’s districts.
Speaking during a meeting with the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs at the Presidency, President Mahama highlighted that traditional rulers possess a unique understanding of their communities' needs and must be given a more active role in the nation’s decentralization agenda.
He indicated that proposed constitutional reforms currently under review could formally expand the participation of traditional leaders within District Assemblies.
President Mahama urged chiefs to collaborate closely with District Chief Executives (DCEs) to ensure that allocated public funds are effectively utilized to deliver visible infrastructure projects and essential services for local residents.
To boost economic growth nationwide, the President unveiled plans to create a 24-hour market in every one of the 261 districts. This initiative aims to grant farmers and local traders broader access to markets and longer operational hours.
Additionally, he reaffirmed the administration's commitment to prioritizing infrastructure in the six newer regions, noting that several key road construction projects in the Ahafo Region have been integrated into the national 'Big Push' development framework.
President Mahama maintained that the government considers traditional authorities essential allies in advancing sustainable economic growth, district-level development, and accountable governance.
