President Mahama Inaugurates New Independent Fiscal Council to Safeguard Public Finance

1 min read

President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in a new five-member Independent Fiscal Council aimed at reinforcing economic stability and enforcing strict financial discipline across government operations.

Formed under the Public Financial Management (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1136), the council is tasked with overseeing state expenditures, evaluating debt sustainability, and promoting accountability in how public funds are managed.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama stressed that managing national resources prudently extends beyond legal compliance to serve as a duty to both current and future citizens. He urged the panel to uphold strict independence, relying on objective data and prioritizing the national interest above political considerations.

Members of the Council:

Dr. Emmanuel Oteng Kumah (Chair)- International Economic Consultant

Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah - Former Governor, Bank of Ghana

Prof. Patrick Opoku Asuming - University of Ghana Business School

Leslie Dwight Mensah - Think Tank Representative

J. Kweku Bedu-Addo - Public Policy Expert

This is a good gesture towards attaining strong economic growth and fiscal discipline.
