3 min read

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the construction of a state-of-the-art 24-Hour Economy Model Market in Juapong, North Tongu District, ushering in a new era of economic empowerment for the Volta Region. The sod-cutting ceremony, which took place as part of the President’s two-day #ResettingGhana Tour, underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing local commerce and fostering sustainable development across the region. Residents, traders, and key stakeholders gathered to witness this milestone event, which promises to position Juapong as a bustling commercial hub.

The initiative forms a cornerstone of the flagship 24-Hour Economy programme, designed to stimulate round-the-clock economic activity and create lasting opportunities for local businesses. By establishing this modern market, the government aims to boost agricultural trade, support small-scale entrepreneurs, and generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The project highlights a strategic focus on transforming rural and semi-urban areas into vibrant economic centres that contribute meaningfully to national growth.

In his address, President Mahama described the proposed facility as far more than a traditional marketplace. He envisioned it as a comprehensive economic centre that would empower farmers, traders, and small businesses by integrating essential services under one roof. The market will facilitate seamless operations that extend beyond buying and selling to include value-added activities critical for modern commerce.

Beyond basic trading spaces, the Juapong Model Market will feature advanced infrastructure for storage, processing, packaging, and distribution of goods. Additional provisions for digital commerce platforms and on-site access to financial services will equip users with the tools needed to thrive in today’s competitive economy. This holistic approach is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve market access, and enhance the overall profitability of local enterprises.

President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s broader dedication to accelerating development in the Volta Region through targeted investments. These include improvements in roads, healthcare, education, agriculture, transport, and agro-industrial projects. He emphasized Juapong’s advantageous location, noting its strong potential to evolve into a major commercial and industrial destination that benefits surrounding communities and the entire region.

Designated as a Category Four Market—the highest tier under the 24-Hour Economy initiative—the Juapong project is set to become one of the largest facilities of its kind. Its successful implementation will serve as a model for similar developments nationwide, driving inclusive economic transformation and reinforcing the government’s vision of a more prosperous and self-reliant Ghana.
