President Mahama Announces Hohoe Hospital Upgrade and Major Infrastructure Initiatives During Volta Region Tour

President John Dramani Mahama engaged residents, traditional leaders, students, and civil society groups in a community engagement and question-and-answer session in Ho on Tuesday as part of his ongoing #ResettingGhana Tour of the Volta Region.

The President addressed a broad spectrum of developmental issues, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, transportation, accessibility, and economic growth, while responding directly to concerns raised by participants.

Healthcare and Infrastructure Announcements

In response to healthcare-related concerns, President Mahama announced the government’s intention to upgrade the Hohoe Municipal Hospital into the Volta Regional Hospital. He stated that feasibility studies and designs for the project would commence in the coming months. The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Ho Teaching Hospital’s role as the region’s premier teaching and referral facility.

On infrastructure and transportation, the President reiterated the government’s dedication to implementing the national Railway Master Plan, with particular emphasis on the Eastern Corridor Railway. This initiative aims to enhance freight transportation, ease pressure on the road network, and stimulate economic growth across the region.

He further highlighted ongoing investments in road infrastructure and efforts to improve water supply through the revival of the Adidome Water Project.

Public Sector Efficiency and Inclusivity

Addressing questions on public sector appointments, President Mahama explained that his administration has deliberately reduced the size of government to enhance efficiency and cut costs. He assured qualified citizens and party supporters that opportunities for national service would continue to arise.

The President outlined several inclusivity measures, including the introduction of free tertiary education for persons with disabilities in public institutions. He also disclosed plans to improve healthcare access by engaging sign language interpreters at major health facilities.

Education and Innovation

On education, President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality learning. Key initiatives include the continued provision of digital learning devices to students, the construction of additional secondary schools, and the planned upgrade of Ohawu Agricultural College into a fully-fledged agricultural university.

He commended students and faculty members for their contributions to practical learning, scientific advancement, and entrepreneurship, encouraging further innovation and research.
