The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources has completed an inspection of the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP) in Ho, Volta Region. The visit formed part of the committee's three-day oversight tour across the Volta and Oti Regions to evaluate regional sanitation facilities.
During the visit, plant management briefed the lawmakers on day-to-day operations, demonstrating how municipal solid waste is gathered, sorted, and converted into organic compost and reusable materials.
Management also highlighted several operational hurdles, including high running costs, degraded access roads, low rates of source-waste sorting, limited community involvement, and lax enforcement of local sanitation regulations. To address these issues, management requested parliamentary backing for new waste transfer stations and long-term financial support for waste infrastructure.
In response, committee members raised questions regarding waste collection methods, recycling protocols, workplace health and safety standards, the feasibility of waste buy-back centres, and market demand for locally produced compost.
The visit gave the committee a clearer picture of IRECOP’s role in promoting sustainable waste management and provided key insights on how to improve sanitation delivery across the Volta Region.
