Parliament to Investigate Controversial GH¢22bn Domestic Gold Program Loss

Hon. Alban Kingsford Bagbin (Speaker of Parliament of Ghana)

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced that the House will investigate the reported $1.7 billion (approximately GH¢22 billion) loss associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) to address growing public debate surrounding the operations.

The move comes after the Minority Caucus submitted a motion requesting a parliamentary probe into the financial figures. The motion also calls for the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, to appear before Parliament to clarify the transactions.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized that the parliamentary review aims to establish whether the $1.7 billion constitutes a direct financial loss or an operational cost tied to executing the program.

He confirmed receiving the Minority’s motion on August 21, 2026, and indicated his decision to allow the House to examine it.

"I intend to admit the motion because we need to determine once and for all whether this figure represents an actual loss or a policy cost," Speaker Bagbin stated.

He expressed confidence that opening the matter to parliamentary scrutiny would offer transparency to the public, allowing citizens to review the facts and draw their own conclusions.
