Okudzeto Inspects Embassies to Address Visa Application Challenges for Ghanaians

2 min read

Address mounting complaints over the treatment and conditions faced by Ghanaian visa applicants, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has embarked on a comprehensive unannounced working visit across more than 20 diplomatic missions and visa application centres in Accra. The exercise allowed the minister to personally inspect service facilities, assess wait times, and experience firsthand the daily realities encountered by citizens seeking travel documentation.

During the tour, Mr. Ablakwa engaged directly with numerous applicants queueing outside various embassies, gathering candid feedback regarding processing delays, overcrowded waiting environments, and high service fees. Citizens shared stories of long hours spent under harsh weather conditions and expressed frustration over inconsistent appointment systems. The minister reassured applicants that the government is fully committed to ensuring their dignity and comfort are respected throughout all consular processes.

Following his site visits, the Foreign Minister announced plans to hold high-level bilateral engagements with the respective Heads of Missions and embassy representatives in the coming days. These discussions will focus on establishing concrete solutions, including expanded indoor waiting spaces, streamlined online scheduling, and improved customer service standards. Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that while foreign nations maintain sovereign control over their visa policies, the safety and humane treatment of Ghanaians on domestic soil remain non-negotiable priorities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to roll out a collaborative framework with key diplomatic missions to track progress and enforce better service delivery standards. This initiative forms part of broader policy reforms aimed at safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaian citizens both at home and abroad, signaling a proactive stance in handling consular diplomacy and citizen advocacy.
