Nsawam Medium Security Prison Empowers Officers with Sign Language Skills to Boost Inclusivity

Officers across several correctional facilities in Ghana have completed an intensive five-day Ghanaian Sign Language (GhSL) training program aimed at improving communication and promoting inclusivity within the prison system.

​Hosted at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, the initiative brought together personnel from multiple locations, including Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Nsawam Female Prison, Koforidua Local Prison, Nsawam Camp Prison, Akuse Male and Female Prisons and Forifori Camp Prison

​Led by Mr. Stanley Samahnyia, Assistant Headmaster of the Mampong Senior Technical School for the Deaf, alongside Mr. Manuel Adatsi, the practical workshop delivered hands-on GhSL instruction. Participants gained key signing skills to better engage with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

​Because clear interaction is critical to maintaining facility safety, supporting inmate rehabilitation, and ensuring fair access to services, this training marks a major step forward in delivering equitable correctional care.
