National Security Intensifies Crackdown on Galamsey in Bosomtwe District

2 min read

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. In a strongly worded statement, the Minister highlighted a successful dawn operation by the National Security team (NAIMOS) targeting illegal mining activities at Beposo in the Bosomtwe District. This latest intervention underscores the region’s firm stance against environmental degradation caused by unregulated mining operations.

Acting on credible intelligence from vigilant whistleblowers, security operatives conducted a swift swoop at the site. The operation resulted in the impoundment of five excavators suspected to have been actively used for illegal mining. Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute all individuals connected to the operation, including the pursuit of earlier suspects linked to the activities.

Dr. Amoakohene expressed profound appreciation for the whistleblowers whose timely information enabled the successful intervention. Their cooperation, he noted, plays a critical role in the broader fight against galamsey. The Minister emphasized that such community vigilance is essential in protecting the region’s natural resources from further exploitation.

The operation forms part of a sustained regional effort to safeguard forests, water bodies, and the overall environment in the Ashanti Region. Illegal mining has long posed severe threats to these ecosystems, leading to deforestation, water pollution, and long-term ecological damage. Dr. Amoakohene made it clear that such destructive practices will not be tolerated.

The Ashanti Regional Minister reiterated that illegal mining has no place in the region. This latest action sends a strong message to operators and their sponsors that enforcement efforts will remain firm and uncompromising. As investigations proceed, authorities continue to call on the public to provide credible information to support ongoing efforts to rid the area of galamsey activities.
