Mahama Visits Flood-Ravaged Hohoe: Donates Relief Items and Pledges Rebuilding Support

2 min read

Hon. James Gunu warmly welcomed H.E. President John Dramani Mahama to Hohoe following devastating recent flooding across the municipality. The President conducted a firsthand assessment of the disaster's impact, interacting directly with displaced residents and local stakeholders to understand the full scope of the emergency. His visit brought a strong message of solidarity to a community grappling with heavy losses, demonstrating high-level national support during a critical time of crisis.

The situation remains serious as initial assessments highlight extensive widespread destruction across low-lying riverside communities, particularly in Hohoe Zongo. Preliminary data from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reveals that over 5,140 residents have been displaced, while 412 homes have suffered severe structural damage across seven affected communities. The rising waters have left hundreds of families in urgent need of temporary shelter, food, and basic necessities.

Expressing deep appreciation on behalf of the chiefs and people of the Volta Region, Hon. James Gunu thanked President Mahama for his hands-on leadership and substantial donation of relief items to ease the suffering of affected households. The community also extended heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, owner of Dzata Cement, for his generous pledge of 5,000 bags of cement. This vital contribution will directly assist displaced families as they undertake the arduous task of repairing and rebuilding their homes.

While immediate relief distribution remains underway, local leadership and emergency agencies are shifting focus toward long-term disaster management strategies. Stakeholders are collaborating to thoroughly investigate the root causes of the severe flooding, clear key water channels, and strengthen local infrastructure. These joint interventions aim to build community resilience and establish robust preventive measures to safeguard Hohoe against future climate-related disasters.
