Korle-Bu Urology and Nephrology Centre Launches September Prostate Cancer Awareness

​The Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence (UNCoE) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has officially opened its Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, urging the public to prioritize early screening and calling for expanded access to high-quality care across Ghana.

​Addressing attendees at the event, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, Chief Executive of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, highlighted the hospital's ongoing mission to inform the public, enhance oncology services, and train medical specialists to serve the nation's growing health needs. He also revealed that management intends to acquire a state-of-the-art robotic surgical system in 2027 to advance surgical precision and improve recovery times for patients.

​Prof. J. E. Mensah, Head of the UNCoE, urged men especially those with a family history of prostate disease to take proactive steps regarding their health and consult specialists early. He stressed the urgent need to expand diagnostic facilities, treatment options, specialized training, and localized research, while appealing to decision-makers to help lower the high financial costs associated with cancer treatment.

​Delivering the keynote address, Prof. M. Y. Kyei advocated for men to incorporate prostate screenings into their routine yearly check-ups. He pointed out that early detection, balanced nutrition, and regular physical activity are vital, emphasizing that men should seek medical evaluation well before any warning signs appear.

​Partnering with the initiative, the Managing Director of Provident Insurance Company Limited, Mr. Kenneth Doe, confirmed the firm's ongoing dedication to funding and supporting the UNCoE’s educational outreach. He noted that their collaboration goes beyond traditional sponsorship, representing a shared dedication to raising community awareness and improving patient support.

​The launch event included a video segment featuring patient experiences titled “Voices of Hope,” an interactive Q&A session with medical experts, and an overview of the educational activities scheduled throughout the month of September.
