Korle Bu Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art 400-Bed Maternity Block

​Preparatory site clearing is officially underway at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) for the construction of a new 400-bed maternity block, ushering in a transformative era for maternal and neonatal healthcare in Ghana. The milestone fulfills a major pledge made by President John Dramani Mahama on July 9, 2026, during the commissioning of KBTH’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. With the designated land formally handed over to the contractor, active site preparation marks the transition from executive commitment to on-the-ground reality for the country's flagship referral center.

​Designed to replace the hospital's aging infrastructure, the upcoming multi-story facility will integrate advanced medical technology with purpose-built patient care spaces. The expansive architectural scope includes modern obstetrics and gynaecology wards, specialized labor and delivery suites, dedicated operating theaters, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit. Crucially, the block will expand critical care capacity through dedicated Neonatal Intensive Care, High Dependency, and adult Intensive Care units, alongside a groundbreaking In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre.

​The new maternity block is set to serve as a comprehensive, single-roof destination for specialized women’s and newborn health. Patient services will encompass everything from routine antenatal, postnatal, and family planning clinics to advanced diagnostic imaging, full-scale laboratory and blood bank facilities, a central pharmacy, and physiotherapy units. Beyond clinical service delivery, the facility incorporates dedicated teaching, research, and conference spaces intended to train the next generation of Ghanaian healthcare professionals and advance regional clinical research.

​Hospital leadership and staff have expressed profound gratitude to the government for prioritizing this high-impact investment in public health infrastructure. Once completed, the 400-bed facility will drastically reduce overcrowding, lower maternal and neonatal mortality risks, and elevate Korle Bu’s clinical capabilities to match top international standards. Management remains confident that this modern environment will empower healthcare workers, deliver safer outcomes for mothers and infants, and solidify KBTH’s standing as a premier center of medical excellence in Africa.
