KAIPTC Champions Traditional Leadership in Peacebuilding at 3rd Teshie Homowo School

2 min read

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) successfully convened the third edition of the Teshie Homowo School from October 1 to 2, 2026, at the Schroder Hall Auditorium in Teshie. Held under the theme “Give Peace a Chance: The Evolving Role of Traditional Leadership in Modern Governance,” the two-day capacity-building programme brought together traditional and religious leaders, government officials, security stakeholders, and community representatives. The initiative focused on equipping participants with practical tools for conflict mapping, root-cause analysis, collaborative governance, alternative dispute resolution, and early-warning mechanisms to foster sustainable community development.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Commandant of KAIPTC, Wing Commander Christian Eshun (Rtd), Deputy Director of Training, underscored the indispensable role traditional authorities play in maintaining social cohesion and preventing local disputes from escalating into broader conflicts. He urged traditional leaders to continuously refine their skills and expand their knowledge to effectively navigate emerging security and governance challenges in modern society.

Addressing the assembly on behalf of the Minister, Mr. Baafi Nsiah, Chief Registrar of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, highlighted the far-reaching economic and social consequences of chieftaincy disputes. He emphasized that local conflicts fragment communities and severely derail vital development projects, calling on all traditional leaders and stakeholders to firmly embrace dialogue, mediation, and adherence to the rule of law when addressing grievances.

In his address, the Teshie Mantse and President of the Teshie Traditional Council, Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akomfra III, commended the Council for overseeing a peaceful Homowo Festival celebration this year, attributing the success to insights gained from past Homowo School sessions. Expressing deep appreciation to KAIPTC for sustaining the project, Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akomfra III urged all participants to serve as peace ambassadors in their communities by sharing their acquired knowledge and prioritizing dialogue to resolve local disputes without requiring security intervention.
