Ignore any unauthorized transports fare hikes - Ghanaians cautioned

2 min read

The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana has issued a strong warning to the general public against paying any unauthorized transport fare increases currently being charged by some drivers and transport companies across the country.

In a press release dated May 21, 2026, the group stated that any fare adjustment outside the officially approved structure by the government and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union is illegal and should be disregarded by commuters.

According to the statement, the association has observed with concern that certain transport operators have unilaterally increased fares on several routes without proper consultation or approval from the relevant authorities. The group described the action as unjustifiable and one that places an unnecessary financial burden on Ghanaians already dealing with economic challenges.

The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana stressed that passengers should only pay fares officially displayed at lorry stations and ignore announcements or directives from unauthorized individuals or groups.

The association further directed all drivers and transport companies that have increased fares without approval to immediately revert to the existing approved rates.

The association clarified that it does not support or endorse any fare increment at this time. It explained that any future transport fare adjustment would only be done through proper consultations involving government, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, and other key stakeholders within the transport sector to ensure fairness and transparency.

The group also urged passengers who encounter drivers charging unapproved fares to report such incidents either to their offices or the nearest police station.

It revealed plans to deploy a special taskforce to monitor activities at major lorry stations and enforce compliance. The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring affordable and sustainable transportation for all citizens while cautioning operators against taking advantage of the public.
