Hon Sebastian Deh Highlights MSMEs as Ghana’s Economic Backbone Amidst Accra Floods

In a display of unwavering commitment, Hon Sebastian Deh, Member of Parliament for Kpando, braved the devastating floods that struck Accra on 29th June to attend the MSME Day 2026 programme held at Kempinski Hotel. Despite the challenging weather conditions that disrupted many activities across the capital, the MP made it a personal duty to participate in the important gathering. His presence underscored the priority placed on supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which continue to drive Ghana’s economy even in the face of adversity.

Hon Deh emphasized the enormous contributions of MSMEs to Ghana’s national economy. Operating across diverse sectors and regions, these enterprises form the very foundation of economic activity in the country. From bustling trading hubs to rural ventures, MSMEs represent a critical force that sustains livelihoods and fuels growth, making their recognition on this dedicated day both timely and essential.

The MP painted a vivid picture of the widespread presence of MSMEs, noting that one can find them in various income-generating ventures from the Kpando market to Sovie Tornu and beyond. Whether in commerce, agriculture, services, or small-scale manufacturing, these businesses demonstrate remarkable resilience and ingenuity. Their ubiquity across urban and rural landscapes highlights their role as everyday engines of local development and community empowerment.

Despite their significance, Hon Deh stressed the urgent need to elevate MSMEs from small-scale operations to fully bankable and climate-resilient entities. With statistics showing they constitute 90% of businesses, provide 80% of jobs, and contribute approximately 70% of GDP, transforming their capacity is vital for sustainable national progress. This evolution would enable better access to finance, improved technology adoption, and stronger defenses against climate-related shocks that increasingly threaten operations.

Hon Deh extended appreciation to the Ghana Enterprises Agency for its leadership in advancing the MSME sector, particularly through the launch of the MSME Digital Go-Live platform. This initiative marks a significant step toward digital empowerment, promising enhanced visibility, market access, and operational efficiency for enterprises nationwide. As Ghana continues to build a more inclusive economy, the MP’s message serves as a powerful call to action for stakeholders to invest in the growth and resilience of MSMEs.
