Hon. Mahama Ayariga Outlines Digital Revenue Plan and Galamsey Strategy During Vetting

The Minister-Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to implement a digital tracking system designed to enhance transparency in local revenue collection. The initiative aims to streamline the gathering of property rates, market tolls, and other internally generated funds across Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

​Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Hon. Ayariga explained that the centralized system will track property details and fee structures to boost accountability. This, he noted, will enable local assemblies to generate essential revenue to fund local development projects.

​Hon. Ayariga appeared before the committee to demonstrate his readiness and vision for the ministry following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.

​Addressing the challenge of illegal small-scale mining, locally referred to as "galamsey," the nominee emphasized the need for stricter oversight in issuing small-scale mining licenses. He urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to take active responsibility in ensuring that all mining operations in their areas adhere to legal and sustainable standards.
