Hon. Kobena Woyome champions Ghana House in Glasgow at the ongoing Commonwealth Games

Hon. Kobena Mensah Woyome has highlighted the vision behind the establishment of Ghana House at the ongoing Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing it as a strategic initiative aimed at ensuring Ghana derives greater national value from participating in major international sporting events.

Speaking on the concept, Hon. Woyome explained that while athletes remain at the heart of Ghana’s participation and competition continues to be the country’s primary objective, the Commonwealth Games also present unique opportunities for governments, businesses, investors, academics, cultural institutions and diaspora communities to build meaningful partnerships. According to him, Ghana House was conceived to intentionally harness these opportunities for national development.

Tracing the evolution of the initiative, Hon. Woyome revealed that the project was initially known as “Ghana Village” and was intended to serve as a welcoming space for Team Ghana, members of the Ghanaian community and friends of the country during the Games. However, after extensive discussions, stakeholders agreed that “Ghana House” better reflected the long-term vision of the project. He noted that while a village welcomes visitors, a house welcomes family, symbolising permanence, belonging and lasting memories.

The change, he stressed, represented more than a rebranding exercise, it marked a shift from organising a temporary event to creating a national platform that could accompany Ghana at future international sporting events.

Hon. Woyome further emphasised that Ghana House was deliberately designed as a collaborative national project rather than the initiative of a single institution. He said government ministries, public agencies, the Ghana Olympic Committee, corporate organisations, development partners, tourism institutions, creative entrepreneurs, exhibitors, volunteers and the Ghanaian diaspora were all brought together to contribute towards its success.

According to him, the broad partnership demonstrates that when the national interest becomes the shared objective, institutional boundaries become less important. He described this spirit of collaboration as one of the greatest achievements of the Ghana House project and expressed confidence that it would continue to promote Ghana’s economic, cultural and investment interests beyond the Commonwealth Games.
