Hon. Bernard Ahiafor Synergizes National and Local Schemes to Boost Skills Training and Economic Growth

2 min read

Over 200 beneficiaries of the National Apprenticeship Program gathered at the Akatsi No. 1 JHS premises on 1st March 2026 to receive essential machines, tools, and training equipment. The formal handing-over ceremony was spearheaded by the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor. The equipment was officially presented to local craft masters and madams, who will serve as mentors and trainers, marking the official commencement of practical, hands-on skill development across the constituency.

This national initiative provides a comprehensive support structure designed to ensure long-term success for participants. Beyond receiving monthly allowances throughout their training period, apprentices are guaranteed start-up kits upon graduation. This critical provision ensures that after mastering their respective trades, these young men and women will possess both the practical expertise and the physical resources required to establish their own flourishing businesses, fostering an environment of sustainable entrepreneurship in the region.

The National Apprenticeship Program builds upon a strong foundation already laid in Akatsi South. Prior to the rollout of this laudable national policy by John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor pioneered the MP’s Apprenticeship Programme four years ago. Through this flagship constituency initiative, over 300 men and women have acquired valuable artisan skills, significantly elevating their livelihoods and contributing directly to the local economy over the years.

Crucially, the launch of the national scheme will not replace the existing MP’s Apprenticeship Programme. Instead, both initiatives will run concurrently, creating a robust dual approach to skill acquisition in Akatsi South. The MP’s scheme will continue to serve as a vital safety net, ensuring that constituents who are not absorbed into the national framework still have equal access to quality vocational and technical training.

By combining the strengths of both national and constituency-level programs, Akatsi South is setting a powerful benchmark for sustainable youth development. This unified strategy addresses the root causes of unemployment by equipping the youth with self-development tools, driving productivity, and fostering economic self-sufficiency. Ultimately, this dual initiative promises to transform lives and usher in a resilient, prosperous future for the people of Akatsi South.
