On 16th July, a solemn and fitting tribute was paid to the late Rt. Hon. Justice Daniel Francis Annan, the historic First Speaker of Parliament in Ghana’s Fourth Republic. The commemorative events began with an inspiring memorial lecture celebrating Justice Annan’s monumental contributions to national governance, parliamentary democracy, and the rule of law. His enduring legacy as a pioneer of modern Ghanaian constitutional democracy was richly reflected upon throughout the remembrance.
Following the memorial lecture, a poignant wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Osu Cemetery to pay final honors at his resting place. Led by the First Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament and MP for Akatsi South, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, the gathering served as a powerful testament to the respect and admiration Justice Annan still commands across the political spectrum and civil society.
The ceremony brought together an esteemed group of leaders, family members, and public officials. Among those present to pay their respects were His Excellency the Vice President, the Clerk to Parliament, the bereaved family, and my good self. Together, we gathered in a shared spirit of solemn remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for a state icon who dedicated his life to public service.
Justice D.F. Annan’s leadership laid a firm foundation for the Fourth Republic’s legislature, setting high standards for fairness, consensus-building, and constitutional integrity. As we remembered his life and work, the events of July 16th served not only as a tribute to an extraordinary statesman, but also as a reminder of our collective duty to preserve and build upon the democratic traditions he helped establish.
