The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has highlighted accessible and high-quality healthcare as a foundational pillar for sustaining President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy Programme. Speaking at the opening of the 24th Annual General and Scientific Conference of the Medical Superintendents’ Group (MSG) in Ho, Hon. Gunu emphasized that economic productivity relies heavily on a healthy, resilient workforce. He urged health professionals and government entities to foster deeper collaboration to drive sustainable development across the country.
The conference, centered on the theme “Leadership and Innovation in Free Primary Healthcare Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage in Ghana: The Role of Medical Superintendents,” served as a platform to align healthcare delivery with national economic strategies. Hon. Gunu stressed that ensuring round-the-clock economic activity requires an equally robust and responsive healthcare infrastructure capable of meeting the needs of workers at any hour.
Addressing healthcare access in the region, the Minister showcased tangible progress in expanding primary healthcare infrastructure to bridge existing service gaps. He reported that 36 Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds have been constructed, with several others currently at various stages of completion, directly targeting the region’s historical deficit of 253 CHPS compounds.
Hon. Gunu reaffirmed the Volta Region’s dedication to advancing Free Primary Healthcare, improving clean water supply to medical facilities, and championing Universal Health Coverage in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3. The conference was chaired by His Royal Majesty Togbe Tepre Hodo IV and attended by key stakeholders, including the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), and Dr. John Koku Awoonor-Williams.
