To enhance waste management across major urban centers, the Minister for Local Government, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to establish waste transfer stations within five kilometers of residential areas.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, September 10, the Minister noted that the initiative aims to shorten the travel distance for local waste collectors and discourage illegal dumping.
Under the proposed strategy, Accra will be mapped into distinct zones, each served by strategically placed transfer stations. This setup will allow small-scale collectors to deposit refuse locally before heavy-duty trucks haul it to designated landfill sites.
“The policy is designed so that no Aboboya [tricycle waste collector] travels more than 5km to access a transfer station,” Ayariga stated.
He further revealed that the government is working to acquire new landfill sites across various sections of Accra to ease the burden on existing facilities.
The proposal has already been presented to Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, who directed the Ministry to finalize the technical designs and cost estimates for inclusion in the 2027 Budget.
Additionally, the Minister mentioned that the government is evaluating the use of high-capacity incinerators to improve waste processing at final disposal sites.
