GNFS Tackles Fire Incidents in Anyinam and Akyem Asafo

2 min read

The Bunso Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) recently managed two separate emergency incidents within the Eastern Region, highlighting prompt responses to ensure public safety.

In the first incident on Monday, September 7, a commercial fire broke out near the main lorry station in Anyinam. Triggered by a suspected electrical fault, the fire was already out by the time a six-member crew under the leadership of ADO II Annan arrived at 0445 hours, following a 0428 hours alert.

Firefighters performed thorough overhaul operations to completely eliminate any lingering heat and prevent a reignition. While the incident partially damaged a wooden ceiling, plastic chairs, a TV stand, and a mattress, alongside two completely ruined standing fans, several gas cylinders and other household goods were successfully salvaged. The crew reported no injuries and took the opportunity to educate the building occupants on basic fire safety measures.

Later that morning, the same station was dispatched to a vehicle fire along the Accra-Kumasi Highway near Akyem Asafo. A seven-member team led by ADO II Amankwah Dacosta reached the scene at 1049 hours after receiving a distress call at 1033 hours. The driver had noticed an unusual noise originating from the engine compartment, pulled over to inspect, and quickly spotted smoke before the black Mazda CX-7 caught fire. Bystanders attempted to help by overturning the vehicle, a move that inadvertently fueled the flames.

Fire personnel deployed foam concentrate to tackle the blaze, successfully extinguishing it by 1110 hours. Although the car was completely written off, no casualties were recorded, and officials have launched an investigation to pinpoint the exact cause.
