The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended that Ghana’s upcoming plastics legislation be named in honor of the late Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, honoring his dedicated fight against plastic waste.
Speaking on Citi FM, Prof. Ayamga-Adongo, the EPA's Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations, revealed that the agency is currently finalizing regulatory framework to back the government’s planned ban on single-use plasticsincluding Styrofoam food containers which is set to begin in January 2027.
Prof. Ayamga-Adongo called on Members of Parliament to designate the bill as the "Murtala Mohammed Law on Plastics in Ghana," calling it a fitting tribute to the late minister's drive to end plastic pollution.
"We are announcing the ban on Styrofoam starting January next year, and we are developing legislation to support the wider ban on single-use plastics moving forward," Prof. Ayamga-Adongo stated. "I am proposing that Parliament name this act after our late colleague, Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed. Naming the legislation the Murtala Mohammed Law on Plastics in Ghana would serve as a lasting tribute to his dedicated fight against plastic waste a cause he cared deeply about."
The proposed bill is part of Ghana’s ongoing effort to significantly reduce plastic waste and advance sustainable environmental practices across the country.
