Ghana’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Celebrates First Anniversary of Toronto’s Sankofa Square

Hon. James Gyakye Quayson, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the first-anniversary celebration of Sankofa Square in Toronto, Canada, from August 21 to 23, 2026. He traveled with Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, and the Consul General in Toronto, Mr. Peter Kobina Taylor.

​During his speech, the Deputy Minister explained that the term "Sankofa" means going back to retrieve and learn from your history. He said this message shows why it is vital for people to reconnect with their African heritage and cultural roots. He also highlighted Sankofa Square as a great space to promote African culture through music, dance, fashion, food, and art.

​He noted that Ghana remains dedicated to working with Africans living in the diaspora. He pointed to government programs like the "Year of Return," "Beyond the Return," the "Black Star Experience," and various Diaspora Summits. He added that young people in the diaspora need to be supported so they can understand their roots and help build Africa’s future.

​Finally, the Deputy Minister talked about the need for repair and justice for historical wrongs, particularly the transatlantic slave trade and chattel slavery. He asked for continued global teamwork, discussion, and support for the international reparations movement that Ghana is leading.
