Ghana to Build Historic 1,200MW State-Owned Thermal Power Plant

​Ghana is set to construct a massive 1,200MW state-owned gas-fired thermal power plant in Kafodzidzi-Abrobeano, located within the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality of the Central Region. Announcing the landmark project during a town hall meeting with Ghanaians in New York on September 25, President John Dramani Mahama confirmed that the agreement will be signed before the end of 2026. Once completed, the combined-cycle facility will eclipse the iconic 1,020MW Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam to become the largest power generation plant in the country's history.

​The project will be executed in phases, utilizing approximately 150 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of natural gas sourced from the OCTP field, Jubilee partners, and the upcoming Gas Processing Plant 2 (GPP-2). Phase one will add 600MW to the national grid upon its scheduled commissioning in 2028, with the remaining capacity coming online shortly after to reach the full 1,200MW potential. This substantial addition aims to significantly boost grid reliability and support national economic expansion.

​Explaining the strategic drive behind the initiative, President Mahama highlighted that energy sector debts have been cleared and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) reorganized to prioritize payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs). While private IPPs who previously threatened shutdowns are now offering to expand capacity by 500MW, the government is prioritizing state-owned generation. This strategy ensures long-term energy security while guarding against stranded assets as Ghana gradually integrates more renewable energy sources and electric vehicles into its power mix.
