Ghana Secures Second Consecutive Term on UN Human Rights Council with 173 Votes

Ghana has been re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027–2029 term, securing a strong endorsement from the international community with 173 votes. The election victory grants the nation a second consecutive three-year mandate on the 47-member body, reinforcing its standing as a dedicated advocate for global democratic governance, rule of law, and fundamental freedoms.

In the competitive global vote, Ghana placed joint second alongside Kuwait and Nepal, all receiving 173 votes. Zambia led the polling overall with 177 votes, while Nigeria secured 172. Other prominent nations elected across various regional groups included Brazil, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Moldova, Ukraine, Jordan, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Burundi, reflecting a broad international coalition on the council.

Celebrating the victory on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed deep appreciation to UN member states for their strong endorsement. In a Facebook update, Ablakwa noted, “Team Ghana keeps winning! We are grateful to UN Member States for impressively electing Ghana to the United Nations Human Rights Council (2027-2029) for the second consecutive time.”

Headquartered in Geneva, the UN Human Rights Council plays a critical role in promoting human rights worldwide, addressing systemic violations, and supporting diplomatic dialogue on global rights issues. Ghana’s renewed tenure offers the West African nation a continued platform to champion human rights standards, strengthen international law, and contribute actively to regional and global rights oversight over the next three years.
