Ten people among them four officers from the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) have been detained as authorities investigate recent drug trafficking through the country's ports.
President John Dramani Mahama was briefed on the progress of the investigation during an urgent meeting with security chiefs on Thursday.
Confirming the developments in an official statement released on Thursday, September 17, Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu noted that ten individuals are currently in custody while inquiries proceed.
The Presidency has not released the names of those detained or specified the exact allegations against them, and it remains unconfirmed whether formal charges have been filed. Officials emphasized that no wrongdoing has been proven at this stage.
In response to the security breach, the meeting evaluated current port security measures and identified key areas for strengthening control systems.
To address these vulnerabilities, President Mahama ordered the creation of an inter-agency task force. The team has been given a two-week deadline to deliver a comprehensive plan to prevent drug smuggling across Ghana’s borders.
