Ghana Prisons Service Hosts Maiden Art Exhibition to Reframe Inmate Rehabilitation

3 min read

The Ghana Prisons Service has taken a historic leap forward in correctional management with the launch of its maiden Director-General and Adehyeɛ’s Art Exhibition, held from October 8–9, 2026. Organised under the Service’s forward-thinking Think Prisons 360 Degrees initiative, the two-day event showcased an inspiring array of paintings, crafts, and creative works produced jointly by the Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), and inmates (Adehyeɛ) from various prison establishments. Designed to harness creative arts as a catalyst for reformation and rehabilitation, the exhibition aimed to give inmates a platform to turn waste into powerful art, while challenging public perceptions and redefining how society views individuals within the correctional system.

The opening day focused heavily on youth engagement and community education, welcoming students from Accra-based institutions including Kinbu Senior High Technical School, Labone SHS, and Rangoon School. Browsing the gallery allowed students to interact directly with artists and gain firsthand insight into how creative expression fosters personal growth and rehabilitation behind bars. Beyond celebrating art, the interactive sessions served as an educational tool, shedding light on correctional services and helping young citizens understand the vital role society plays in accepting and supporting the reintegration of former inmates into their communities.

On the second day, dignitaries, guests, and community leaders gathered for the main event, which combined artistic displays with memorable performances. The venue came alive with music from the Master Piece Band, the Adehyeɛ Band from the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, the Fearless Echoes, and a moving poetry recital by an inmate collectively highlighting the rich talent harboured within correctional facilities. Chaired by H.E. HRM Drolor Bosso Adamtey, Se Mantse of the Shai Traditional Area, the ceremony drew high praise for positioning rehabilitation at the core of the prison mandate. Special Guest of Honour, Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Hon. Sampson Ahi, further noted that the exhibition stands as a testament to human resilience and the capacity to rise above adversity.

The highlight of the event was an auction of the displayed artworks, offering attendees the opportunity to purchase unique pieces created by Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie and the inmates. Proceeds from the auction will directly fund inmate reformation programs and support the establishment of dedicated creative arts centres across prison facilities nationwide. By turning talent into opportunity, the Ghana Prisons Service is not only changing the narrative surrounding prison life, but also providing Adehyeɛ with tangible skills and hope for a productive future beyond their sentence.
