Ghana Joins International Big Cats Alliance to Boost Wildlife Conservation and Eco-Tourism

2 min read

Ghana has formally signed onto the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), marking a major milestone in the country’s commitment to global wildlife preservation and environmental stewardship. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, presented the signed agreement along with the instrument of acceptance to India’s External Affairs Minister, His Excellency Dr. S. Jaishankar, during his official visit to Ghana. The ceremony underscores a growing diplomatic and environmental partnership between Ghana and India, aimed at safeguarding the world's most vulnerable megafauna.

The IBCA, launched in 2023 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside key global partners, is a coalition dedicated to protecting seven major big cat species: lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, pumas, snow leopards, and cheetahs. By joining the alliance, Ghana gains access to a robust international framework that provides scientific expertise, joint anti-poaching strategies, and vital resource-sharing mechanisms. This coalition brings together range countries, conservationists, and international bodies to fight habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade on a global scale.

This strategic move aligns directly with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama to transform Ghana into a premier conservation destination in West Africa. Under his leadership, the government is pursuing an ambitious agenda to expand and revitalize the nation's national parks and wildlife reserves. By strengthening enforcement against poaching and rehabilitating degraded habitats, Ghana aims to safeguard native species while re-establishing viable environments for big cats to thrive safely in the wild.

Beyond wild spaces, Ghana’s membership in the IBCA will support the modernization and revival of national zoos, enhancing public education and breeding programs. By blending enhanced wildlife protection with modernized eco-tourism infrastructure, the country is positioning itself to attract international visitors, create sustainable local jobs, and serve as a beacon of biodiversity conservation across the region.
