Cabinet has officially approved Ghana’s application to join the BRICS bloc. The groundbreaking announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, signaling Ghana's commitment to aligning with emerging global economies, including founder nations Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
The decision reflects Ghana’s strategic push to diversify its international partnerships and reduce over-reliance on traditional Western financial systems. By seeking membership in the expanding geopolitical coalition, Accra aims to leverage new avenues for infrastructure development, economic growth, and technology transfer, while bolstering trade ties across the Global South.
Speaking on the Cabinet’s green light, Foreign Affairs Minister Ablakwa emphasized that joining BRICS forms part of a broader vision anchored on national interest, economic resilience, and strategic multilateralism. He highlighted that the move will unlock substantial financing options via the New Development Bank (NDB) and allow Ghana to play a more active role in global economic decision-making.
With diplomatic formalities now underway, Ghana joins a growing roster of African and developing nations turning to BRICS to accelerate sustainable development. The decision is expected to stir widespread discussion among economic analysts and policy experts as Ghana prepares to integrate into one of the world's fastest-growing political and economic powerhouses.
