Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, met with the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Amb. Selma Malika Haddadi, on the margins of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The forward-looking dialogue centered on Ghana’s strategic roadmap for taking over the African Union Chairmanship when President John Mahama assumes the position in 2027. Hon. Ablakwa shared key focus areas from Ghana’s official AU Chairmanship Strategy Document commissioned directly by President Mahama while both leaders reviewed the state of the union and discussed vision alignments to accelerate the achievement of Agenda 2063.
A major highlight of the meeting was a shared commitment to advance the global Reparatory Justice Agenda. Building on the momentum of a Ghana-led UN resolution that formally declared the transatlantic enslavement of African people as the gravest crime against humanity, Ghana and the AU are intensifying their collaborative efforts. The two parties are co-leading several high-profile initiatives at UNGA, including a high-level side event focused specifically on the Restitution Pillar of Reparatory Justice to mobilize continental solidarity and international action.
Ambassador Haddadi commended Ghana for its proactive leadership, noting that the country concluded its comprehensive preparations six months ahead of schedule. Calling Ghana’s early readiness an inspiring benchmark, the AU Deputy Chairperson stated that this proactive approach should serve as the blueprint for future AU Chairmanships. The meeting underscores Ghana’s emerging leadership role in shaping continental policy, driving historical justice, and guiding Africa toward a unified future.
