The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, hosted the Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer of the World Bank Group in his office, alongside the leadership of Ghana’s Parliament. The high-level meeting provided a platform for constructive dialogue on strengthening institutional collaboration between the World Bank Group and the Parliament of Ghana, underscoring a shared commitment to sustainable economic growth, transparency, and effective legislative oversight.
The visit comes as the World Bank and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) continue their joint support for Ghana's legislature through a targeted initiative titled "Building the Capacity of Parliamentarians on Economic and Financial Governance." This initiative aims to equip Ghanaian lawmakers with the necessary analytical tools, policy frameworks, and financial expertise required to address complex economic challenges and manage public resources responsibly.
At the core of the project is direct technical and capacity enhancement support provided to seven key finance- and economy-related committees within Parliament. By empowering these committees with deeper insights and data-driven capabilities, the program enhances the house's ability to scrutinize national budgets, evaluate fiscal policies, and ensure rigorous accountability across state institutions.
Hon. Bernard Ahiafor expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from the World Bank and the FCDO, emphasizing that building strong parliamentary institutions is vital for sustainable development. Discussions concluded with a shared vision for future strategic collaborations between the World Bank Group and the Parliament of Ghana, reaffirming their mutual dedication to advancing transparent economic governance for the nation.
